Abstract
An expert system shell designed for boiler information management systems (BIMSs) is introduced. After the shell has been embedded into a BIMS, it becomes an intelligent interface between the boiler examiners and the BIMS. The shell is in charge of: accepting the input flaws found in a checked boiler; generating examination and maintenance reports; storing the generated reports in archived documents; and updating the contents of the corresponding databases of the BIMS
