Abstract
A description is given of the RACE program, (R&D in advanced communications technologies for Europe), which is intended to provide a framework for all entities interested in a fruitful cooperation concerning the long-term future of telecommunications. RACE is intended to impact the activities of strategic planning/R&D of the European telecommunications sector. It is expected to provide a major contribution to an early harmonization process. The RACE program will implement pilot trials not only for assessing the demand of telecommunications service but also as verification tools for the technical solutions proposed
