Abstract :
This paper describes transmission line protection system against lightning and which method used in this protection and also how to prevent lightning effects on the line. Although Transmission lines protection needs for lightning strokes and switching transient, lightning protection is essential on the transmission line. If the fault is present, additional power system will be damaged and minimizing system reliability. Myanmar has unequal lightning ground flash density all over the country, so consideration of lightning effect on the line is considered. Power outages reports dating from Ministry of Electrical Power, No. (2) which was analyzed and the results indicated that most power outages were due to lightning. The high number of power outages that are attributed to lightning does not only affect Myanmar but also other countries all over the world. This test line especially for 230 kV level results indicated a marked improvement of the lightning performance of the new project line. This paper discusses how to choice the shield wires location by using shielding method with MATLAB software and recommendations and future work-based on the theory.
