  • Abstract
Wireless connectivity may take many forms, from 3G public networks to semiprivate high bandwidth access points based on Wi-Fi technologies, such as 802.11. The final effect is to enable new classes of communications-oriented mobile applications. We discuss the design and performance of a wireless Internet application designed to support a handheld multimedia mobile guide (termed MoG). Currently, MoG provides users with a set of location-based multimedia information services on tourist attractions, shops and restaurants in the city of Cesena (Italy). Our experience with MoG has demonstrated that the combination of modern multimedia Web technologies and high-bandwidth communication networks may be effective for providing clients with ubiquitous and personalized information services.
