Abstract
The 5 GHz licence-exempt (LE) band has the bandwidth and propagation characteristics that make it suitable for high speed wireless multimedia communications. However, regulatory requirements make it difficult to use this band to its full potential in such applications unless space division multiple access techniques and sectorization by high-gain microcells is used. This paper summarizes factors such as sector size, link budget gain, propagation loss, and cochannel interference control, which determine the form and characteristics of a new type of LE multimedia wireless network suitable for public access applications
