Summary form only given, as follows. Optical transmission capacity has been increased up to 1 Terabit/sec. capacity by WDM. Even a single channel transmission rate now reaches up to 20 Gb/s. This paper focuses on single channel transmission and discusses the limitation factors, such as fiber nonlinear effects, dispersion compensation methods, modulation techniques, and receiver designs, primary for realistic system applications
