  • Abstract
This paper will describe the latest technological developments of the Betacam SX system. In particular, detailing some of the key enabling technologies to bring together a very powerful, on-line editing package into a small attache case sized system. Ideal for the needs of the news journalist and enabling him to complete the editing of stories in remote parts of the world. In the first instance the package will consist of twin tape decks but with the future potential to upgrade to a hybrid tape and non-linear disc system. The integrated audio facilities, battery operation and viewing screens create a single package with enormous benefits to the ENG team, not least in terms of a reduced amount of equipment but also better productivity. The application of these new technologies will bring not only technical and operational benefits, but significant cost savings, improved coverage of fast breaking news and quicker time-to-air
