Abstract :
It is shown how the use of a mathematical model and the application of adequate transformations rules, allows the design of efficient systolic arrays (SAs). Starting from simple SAs which are not well suited for a real implementation, SAs are obtained where practical features are taken into account, namely: two levels of pipelining; fixed number of processing elements; and unequal computational times for different operations. The proposed design technique has been applied to the design of a problem-size-independent, computationally balanced and two-level pipelines 1-D SA with data contraflow to solve triangular systems of equations.<>
