Abstract
This paper proposes a high-quality and very low power consumption baseband LSIC for the Personal Handy Phone System and shows the modem configuration and transmission performance. The developed baseband LSIC is composed of a digital baseband modulator, a coherent demodulator, an ADPCM voice codec with a click noise suppressor, a hardware implemented TDMA-TDD controller and an LAPDC (Layer 2 protocol) controller. It completely meets the Personal Handy Phone System (PHS) standard, the personal communication system used in Japan. Experimental results show that the novel coherent demodulator reduces the irreducible frame error rate by 40%, and achieves an Eb/N0 improvement of 3 dB in typical fading environments compared with the conventional demodulator employing differential detection. Moreover, the novel circuit configurations of the modem, ADPCM codec, TDMA-TDD controller and LAPDC controller make it possible to significantly reduce the power consumption of personal terminals. By employing the developed LSIC, a very compact and very long battery life (10 hour talking time) personal communication terminal is realized
