Abstract :
An audio coder capable of high-fidelity representation of audio signals (sampled at 44.1 kHz) at a rate of 2.5 bits/sample is presented. The coder is based on a wavelet transform with frequency resolutions varying from 21.5 Hz to 344 Hz, and time resolutions varying from 23.2 ms to 1.45 ms. With this multiresolution approach, two benefits result. The preecho effect for high-frequency transients is virtually eliminated, and the wavelet transform has a computational complexity that is 15% lower than that of the commonly used block transform
