Abstract
Transform coding is widely used for image compression. If vector quantization is used in the transform domain, the definition of the optimal transform should be modified because the performance of vector quantization is better when the components within each vector are more correlated. The attributes of the optimal transform for vector quantization are discussed. It is shown how to construct the optimal transform for vector quantization based on the first order Markov model of images
