Abstract
Adaptive control has been seen as an ultimate goal in control system research for approximately 50 years. Despite a significant number of practical applications and significant supporting theory, we are still a long way from having a full understanding of this important class of control strategies. The aim of the paper is to give a personal reflection on the status of adaptive control and to make some suggestions where future research effort might be profitably directed
