Abstract :
The author proposes the use of spectral averaging techniques to measure the harmonic distortions and the noise floor of an analog-to-digital (A/D) digitizing subsystem. The noise floor of an ideal 8-bit A/D convertor is derived in closed form. It is shown that this noise floor is a function of the A/D resolution, the record length, and the equivalent noise bandwidth of the window function used in the DFT (discrete Fourier transform) computation. Both experimental and simulation results are presented and it is shown that they are in good agreement with the theoretical results
