Abstract :
A recently developed technology allows the use of pure lead for positive spine grids and pure copper for negative grids, straps, and terminal posts. This technology totally avoids the use of antimony, while increasing life and improving performances in connection with high rate discharges. Other advantages are higher reliability; lower manpower cost, due to automation of the process; lower total cost, compared with standard types; possibility of producing grids of larger dimensions; and elimination of casting operations for positive and negative grids, by the use of mechanical working only. The complete program of research and development is summarized which has now approached patent protection for both positive and negative grid technology. A new design for industrial traction and stationary cells, able to supply more power and more capacity for longer lifetime, has also been developed
