Abstract
A 3D formulation of quasi-static electric fields is applied to study the polymeric and porcelain insulator performances under contaminated conditions. For the analysis of the electric field stress, the pollution layers covering the insulator structures have to be taken into account. The thin conductive dirt layers positioned on the outer surface of the insulators are represented by the 2D model with a superficial conductivity avoiding additional difficulties in the 3D mesh generation.
