Abstract :
The most recent developments in the field of microelectronics have allowed the latest generation of UPS (uninterruptible power systems) to be designed with a completely different architecture from preceding generations. The introduction of microprocessors, both control and diagnostic circuits, has allowed the functions of uninterruptible power systems to be extended, with special reference to information management systems, to the point where they can now be fully integrated with the units they supply. The author considers the possible functions offered by this new machine architecture and suggests ideas for a number of applications. In particular attention is given to the integration of the intelligent UPS with the other elements which make up with the plant
