Abstract
A novel approach is used to integrate two traditionally different services, namely, mobile radio and rural subscriber radio. The proposed integrated rural system (IRS) will offer telephone service to subscribers along highways and in the sparsely populated areas around them. The similarities and differences between the two services are discussed. The IRS system is described in terms of feasibility, advantages, and implementation features. A practical system using one-dimensional cellular coverage along highways is suggested. A case study for an application in Saudi Arabia is given
