Abstract
Different strategies for integrating IP (internet protocol) and WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) networks have been proposed by standardization bodies. These proposals are based on either the peer or the overlay integration models. This paper proposes a simple approach for IP over WDM integration using MPLS (multi-protocol label switching), based on the overlay model. The implementation of a prototype for the architecture validation using Linux based LSRs (label switching routers) and optical cross-connects (OXCs) running a proprietary control plane is described, and finally, experimental results showing the functional operation and fast recovery tests are presented.
