Abstract :
A multimedia channel allocation scheme using both pre-emptive priority and traffic overflowing (PRTO) for multimedia overlay networks is proposed and studied in terms of the connection-level QoS. The contributions of our work are threefold. First, traffic overflowing strategy is introduced to improve the service continuity. When all the channels in a given macro-cells are occupied, high-mobility handoff requests can be overflowed to heterogeneous cells, so do the low-mobility multimedia services. Second, pre-emptive priority strategies are used to classify high-mobility real-time services and other services. High-mobility real-time services are given higher priority for they are allowed to pre-empt channels employed by other services in macro-cells. And third, to meet the high QoS requirements of some services and increase the utilization of radio resources, certain services can be transformed between real-time services and non-real-time services as necessary. Simulation results are also provided for demonstrating that the proposed schemes can improve the system performance.
