Abstract :
The authors derive a fundamental relationship, for a nonlinear one-port, between the presence of negative differential resistance across the port at a particular DC operating point and the stability of that operating point. In particular, they illustrate that the presence of negative differential resistance does not necessarily imply instability for all possible resistive port terminations but that it does imply instability for either an open-circuit or a short-circuit termination
