Abstract
A software tool is described for the design and implementation of parallel programs. The approach utilizes the STRAND concurrent programming language. Preliminary work on a parallel blackboard system is discussed. Based on this work, a general model for a distributed knowledge-based system is proposed. A formal prototype for the proposed model is analyzed with respect to its efficiency. A specific application, a concurrent query processing program for a distributed database, is considered in some detail. The application highlights the complementary nature of knowledge-based and database processing
