Abstract :
In this paper, we attempt to estimate the effectiveness of geographical routing in the global network. The concept of the length of the telecommunications link is introduced. In order to calculate the length, the physical principle of finite speed of light and the minimum time of packet delay on the investigated route are used. The effectiveness ratio of geographic routing is taken to equal the ratio of telecommunication length to geographical distance between the end points of a route. The telecommunications measurement infrastructure RIPE Atlas allows collection of data from probes scattered around the world. On the basis of these data, values of the coefficients of the efficiency of geographic routing for different autonomous systems are calculated.
