Abstract
The radio data systems (RDS) for VHF/FM sound broadcasting as specified and recommended by the EBU and CCIR offers the flexibility to convey not only information about the broadcast service but also, to some extent, other information unrelated to the sound programs. An example of such an application is radio paging. The RDS system was in fact developed from the MBS paging service, which has been successfully used in Sweden and elsewhere since 1978. To extend the facilities which the paging service is able to support and to improve the integration of the paging feature into the RDS system, an enhanced paging service using capacity with the RDS data-stream has been developed by the Swedish Telecom Radio (STR). A brief description is given of the general structure of the RDS system. The compatible integration of radio paging as a new application of the system is examined
