Abstract :
A one-to-one relationship between traditional electric power system operation and its analytical characterization as a monotone network is discussed. Conditions are reviewed for the power network to be a monotone network in the region of interest. A class of present operating problems, primarily due to voltage control misoperation, is assessed from this viewpoint. Open questions are raised regarding the cost of more dynamic controls which could assure monotone network operation in the closed-loop operation for conditions when the open-loop network may not be characterizable as a nonlinear monotone network
