Abstract :
The author addresses the problem of bandwidth reduction, which is needed to allow the HDTV signal to be transmitted through the narrow DBS channel to fulfil the compatibility requirement. This is achieved by means of a bandwidth-reduction system named the HDMAC coding system. After two years of study in the framework of the HDTV Eureka project, the principle of the HDMAC system has been defined. The principle and the bandwidth-reduction technique applied to the video signal are described
