Abstract :
Describes `ISI coding´-a combined trellis coding and preceding technique for transmission over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. Like the precoding scheme in Laroia et al. (1993), the ISI coder makes it possible to realize both coding and shaping gains over ISI channels. By combining coding and precoding however, the ISI coder results in a smaller `precoding loss´ than Laroia et al., and the loss is also independent of the number of coset partitions used to generate the trellis code. At high rates (large SNR) this makes it possible to approach channel capacity over ISI channels as closely as over memoryless channels
