Abstract :
The problems and issues that arise in systems based on analysis/synthesis filter banks are discussed. A historical perspective of advances made in the development of systems and in the understanding of the problem is presented. The authors define the general system-design problem for one and two dimensions and highlight some of the major contributions to this area over the past 15 yr, beginning with the invention of tree-structured filter banks based on quadrature mirror filters. The emerging application area is reviewed, and the evolution from one-dimensional to multidimensional designs and realizations is discussed
