Abstract :
Enterprise systems can be categorized into certain forms based on their characteristics and in response to the business environment. Such classification results in development of various typologies for systems, each addressing certain analytical requirements. Categorizing systems based on their flexibility is an example of such typologies. While several typologies of systems have been developed, more research on choosing effective styles of management, based on the right degree of freedom and level of control for each category, is required. In this paper, we describe the spectrum of existing managerial approaches. Since understanding available methodologies of systems classification helps decision-makers in selecting more appropriate management styles for different systems, we analyze the flexibility-based typology of systems and map its categories with the described styles of management. This typology-based approach for adopting management styles can increase the effectiveness of management practices while decreasing the complexity of decision-making in today´s dynamic environment.
