Abstract :
Some new error-correcting modulation codes are presented for magnetic recording systems modeled as partial-response (PR) channels. Many of the simple optimal codes constructed are not matched spectral null (MSN) codes. Using a recently developed model for the magnetic disk, it is shown that even very simple codes can increase data storage density by 50% or more
