Abstract
The goal in designing a shielded connector is to find the ideal balance of performance, convenience and economy. Overall shielding performance is a result of leakage at several independent features, such as the braid capture of the plug, the mating interface and the connection to the panel by the receptacle. Knowing the individual FEATURE transfer impedances allows a design strategy to be implemented. Obtaining feature transfer impedances via measurement is explained. Examples of optimizing cost and benefit is presented for a design effort to improve the High Speed Serial Data Connector (HSSDC) and a decoupled connector for IEEE 1394
