Abstract :
Top-Level Design is both a design concept and a design method. Unlike software engineering, information resource planning and technology road maps, Top-level Design as a design method is not clearly defined in terms of its contents and methods. Nevertheless Top-Level Design as a concept is now widely used on both macro-levels, such as the macro planning of informatization in nations, government departments and the armed forces, and on micro-levels, such as the design of a large system. Top-level Design can be divided into two categories: “planning” and “method”. In the construction of Top-Level Design Method on Informatization (TDMI), there are eight steps to follow: status description, object description, system construction, system architecture, data system, system development, comprehensive integration and performance testing. TDMI, aiming to solve the problems of system integration, is characterized by universality, consistency, openness and innovation. To further improve and standardize TDMI, we present some thoughts concerning the tools used in system architecture.
