  • Abstract
Summary form only given. We are concerned with the problem of multiplexing voice and low speed data traffic over a common digital channel for transmission, where the voice traffic has priority over the data traffic, and where the arrival process of the voice traffic may be time-varying. The issue is then dynamic or semi-dynamic allocation of the channel capacity dedicated to voice versus data transmissions, for best possible utilization of the transmission medium with simultaneously low implementation overhead, while constraints imposed by the voice traffic are also maintained. We name the class of algorithms which implement the allocation of the channel capacity to the voice versus data traffic, hybrid multiplexing algorithms, (HMAs). We present, analyze and compare, two HMAs: (a) a semidynamic HMA, for voice arrival processes whose statistics are known and may vary relatively slowly in time; and (b) a dynamic HMA, for voice arrival processes that either vary relatively fast in time or their statistics are unknown to the designer. In the designs of both the semidynamic and the dynamic HMAs, specific constraints imposed by the voice traffic are incorporated
