Abstract :
The construction and the algebraic decoding scheme of block codes with an inhomogeneous distance structure are presented. Weakening the distance requirements is a successful means of improving the bandwidth efficiency, because for inhomogeneous block codes algebraic decoding beyond the bounded minimum distance is feasible. For ambiguous algebraic results a likelihood calculation is necessary in a second decoding step, where the use of side information improves the decoding performance significantly
