Abstract :
It all started in the 70´ies, when the simple object+attribute+relationship triplet was proposed to turn schemas of relational databases into something readable for the casual user. Since then conceptual models have constantly evolved to include more sophisticated data structures as well as new concepts tailored to cover data modeling in specific domains such as temporal and spatial data. Context modeling and mobility data modeling are the latest developments, still in the research phase. This tutorial reviews the most important concepts that changed the face of database design over the last 40 years. The focus is not on the mathematical interpretation of the concepts, but on a clear, easy to follow explanation of the concepts, and examples of their use.
