Abstract :
This paper presents a novel approach for determining whether a convolutional encoder is catastrophic. This new method which is based on linear algebra properties can be applied to rate R=1/ν codes or rate R=b/ν (usual or punctured) convolutional encoders, is very easy to implement in software and provides for some coding rates a substantial reduction in required computational complexity
