Abstract :
Rationale for a new ESD standard which avoids the inconsistent test results between different ESD simulators which comply with the widely used IEC 1000-4-2 ESD standard is presented. Some of the deficiencies of existing ESD standards are limited control of peak current as a function of precharge voltage, inadequate bandwidth of the calibration target, no specification on the discharge current derivative nor the generated E and H fields, along with variances with the same test setup. Specific ESD test methods and limits are given for consumer product, information technology equipment (ITE) and telecommunication equipment
