Abstract
Presents an online algorithm for data compression with a fidelity criterion. For finite discrete memoryless sources satisfying certain reasonable conditions the asymptotic performance of the authors´ algorithm achieves the fundamental rate distortion limit without assuming a priori knowledge of the source statistics
