Abstract :
The application of radio frequency identification (RFID) networks pervasively to the hospital environment has the potential to improve efficiencies in operations. Understanding and managing the captured fine grained real time data in the context of hospital settings pose challenges for the middleware which has to connect RFID networks with backend applications. This paper presents an event-based middleware paradigm to data management in RFID deployments. A prototyped system, eVent, is implemented to organize, manage, and disseminate distributed hospital RFID data in real-time. Key features of TenVe include the event extraction from RFID data stream, the meaningful event generation within the context of patient-related information contained in the backend applications, the dynamic event stream handling techniques such as query and visualization. The application of TenVe is illustrated in the context of an acute hemodialysis setting.
