Abstract :
A strategy for tactile hearing aids, useful in detection of acoustic alarm signals, called TIPS (tactile identification of preclassified signals) is proposed. The first part of TIPS is the modeling of alarm signals, feature extraction, and machine recognition with several classification algorithms; the second part of TIPS is the electrotactile nerve fiber stimulation with optimal patterns for painfree and reliable transmission of recognition results. Limits, problems, and one solution, an experimental wearable and trainable alarm-signal recognition aid called SIGNALON, are discussed
