  • Abstract
Optical trapping and manipulation of micro-particles have been investigated for a wide variety of applications since the first experimental observation reported by Ashkin in 1970. This subject has received increasing attention in recent years due to their unique potential applications in biological, biomedical, and nanosciences and technologies. In this paper, I briefly review two recent important developments of optical trapping and manipulation, namely photonics force microscopy (PFM) based on single-beam gradient-force trap (also know as optical tweezers) and optical stretcher (or optical trap-and-stretch) based on a counter-propagating dual-beam configuration. Potential applications of these techniques to DNA mechanics and cellular mechanics will be discussed, and some preliminary experimental data will be presented.
