Abstract :
An iceberg surveillance experiment involving multiple sensors was carried out in a one-week period between April and May, 1995. Several Canadian and U.S. Agencies and members of industry participated The Canadian Department of National Defence, in collaboration with industry provided high-frequency surface-wave radar (HFSWR) sensors, while the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards collected surface and aerial ground-truth data. The experiment coincided with the over-flight of the surveillance area by the ERS-1 satellite. The ERS-1 data permitted the evaluation of techniques for detecting icebergs from satellite imagery. This article reports the results of tracking surface targets with the HFSWR. Surface targets were detected out to beyond 100 nautical miles. The estimated positions of the targets correlated very well with the available ground-truth data
