Abstract
This review briefly considers the physics and liquid crystal (LC) device applications of the novel photo-aligning technology. The review describes an introduction to the physical mechanisms of photo-aligning and presents a characterization of LC-surface interaction. This review also discusses the photo-aligning process of ferroelectric LC and the utilization of a high contrast photo-aligned wide-viewing angle vertical aligned nematic mode. The bistability of π-BTN based on asymmetric anchoring of the LC cell is investigated and new superthin photo-aligned polarizers are demonstrated for the first time.
