Abstract :
This article describes the development of a new three-phase dual voltage traction drive system. This system has been developed around providing the greatest benefits to train operators over previous traction systems. This traction `package´ can be provided in an AC, DC or multiple voltage versions and uses standard interchangeable building blocks in either single or multiple voltage derivatives. These building blocks form a small range of `off the shelf´ components including power modules, control modules and software modules. This paper details the approach to the modular design of such traction systems for operator benefit and an approach to minimising the production of interference, particularly with respect to signalling track circuits
