Abstract :
This paper shows a technique to economically justify transposition of a transmission line using the cost of the transposition towers versus the line losses for a transposed or non-transposed line over the in-service life of the line. This paper discusses and presents: 1. Background on transmission line transposition. 2. A method for calculating the three-phase line losses for unbalanced conditions. 3. A method for calculating the net present value of the line losses and comparing the line losses for a transposed versus untransposed line. 4. Case study comparison for two different transmission line configurations. The method shown in this paper provides the transmission line owner with the necessary tools to make an educated decision on transmission line transposition.
