Abstract :
We report observations from a simple experiment in which a single laser beam is incident n a highly nonlinear YAlO3:Er3+ ,Cr3+ crystal. At low intensity the transmitted beam is attenuated by transmission through the crystal but retains the Gaussian intensity profile of the incident beam. As the intensity is increased a pattern of concentric rings is evident in the transmitted far-field and at still higher intensities the transmitted beam and the beam reflected within the medium show time-dependent behaviour
