Abstract :
This paper describes the underlying concept and application of an innovative approach for developing an embedded system diagnostics capability integral to a prime system architecture. The approach is predicated on the use of an automated diagnostic tool set. This tool set enables the prime system designer to design both an embedded and off-line diagnostic capability concurrently with the prime system design. Using the tool set, the designer performs trade-offs and generates a run-time diagnostic software module. The discussion of the attributes and operation of the Automated Diagnostic Tool Set focuses on its application to a modern day submarine ship control system
