Abstract :
This paper presents a route-based traffic speed estimation model according to wireless signal - timing advance (TA) in global system for mobile communication (GSM) network. In this model, each vehicle with cellphone is considered as a probe vehicle. When probe vehicle passes the transition points between TA sectors, the timestamp and cellphone ID can be recorded. In this way, probe vehicle is tracked and related travel time and speed information is extracted. A novel simulation platform is established for validation of this model using a traffic simulation software package - CORSIM. This model is evaluated by simulating the traffic condition in Madison Midwest urban area in Wisconsin, USA. Wireless signals for TA are generated according to a virtual wireless network over this area
