Abstract :
The problem addressed here involves a central controller seeking to optimize traffic network performance under real-time routing information provision to drivers while explicitly accounting for drivers´ likely reactions towards the information. A fuzzy control approach is used to identify the behavior-consistent information-based control strategies. Experiments are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the fuzzy controller. The results show the importance of incorporating driver behavior in the identification of the information strategies. Significant differences in terms of total system travel time can be obtained when the behavior-consistent approach is compared to traditional approaches
