Abstract
Summary form only given. This presentation summarises the progress to date in jump-starting a semiconductor fabrication and design industry in Malaysia. Starting with Malaysia´s position as a centre of excellence in assembly and test, the MIMOS programme seeks to develop a fully integrated semiconductor industry by venturing into fabrication and design. Smart partnerships have been forged with local and foreign partners in order to achieve this goal. Lessons drawn from this experience may be useful to other developing countries planning to become more self-reliant in high-technology industries.
