The characteristics about the Chinese urban public space formation in 1949-1977 are discussed in this paper based on their final functions. The historical periods about the Chinese urban public space development during 1949-1977 are summarized in this paper. There are three main categories urban public space according to their space formation, and the origin, formation feature and the designing method about the three categories public space are provided in details.
